Paper Party Bags - Make Your Own

Let’s talk party bags, more specifically paper party bags.

Party bags, loot bags, gift bags or goodie bags. Whatever you call them, for most, they bring back fond memories of going to a party as a child. Bringing home treasure at the end of the party, which more often than not you had to share with a sibling

The classic party bags I remember are the plastic ones, usually with a clown or balloons on the front.

Now you see them in shops for all different themes, in recent years we have had PJ Masks and Fireman Sam.

The big problem for me with these comes in that in 2021 we are more aware of our plastic usage. I am far from being perfect in this, (my party bags have Lego sets inside that come in a plastic bag) but where I can I will try to cut out plastic.

What Alternatives Are There?

That was the easy part for me, deciding not to use plastic party bags, but what was the alternative?

I have looked at paper party bags for a few years but there were 2 main problems with them.

  1. They were too plain for what I wanted.
  2. They were expensive.

You Will Need

  • Coloured paper or card
  • Glue and scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Hole punch and ruler

HOW TO - Paper Party Bags

Step 1

Making A Party Bag From A4 Paper

With a little bit of practice I got the hang of folding the party bags quite easily.

For this step you will need

  • A4 paper
  • A glue stick
  • A ruler
Fold your A4 paper almost in half leaving a 1-2cm overlay to act as a seam.

Step 2

Glue The Party Bag Seam

Fold in the seam and use a glue stick to attach to the other side. At this point, your bag will look like a paper tube.

Step 3

Fold The Bottom of The Party Bag

Fold up the bottom edge.

How far you fold up the bottom will determine how wide the base of your bag will be.

I only needed a narrow party bag so mine was 4cm.

Open the ‘pocket’ at the bottom and flatten in the corners to line up with the centre.

Step 4

Fold Up The Flaps

Measure and fold the bottom flap up just past the centre line.

Repeat with the top flap.

Using your glue, stick down overlapping edges. You could also use tape for this.

Step 5

Folding The Sides

Your folds would have made a diamond shape on each side.

Fold the sides in, through the 2 points of the diamonds and up to the top.

Step 6

Open Up Your Party Bag

Open your bag, push the side folds inwards and flatten the bottom.
